Summary

Use a brief paper diary to prepare useful questions about sleep without relying on a wearable score.

General education for adults. This article has not been clinically reviewed and does not replace individual advice from a qualified professional.

Record enough to have a useful conversation

A sleep diary is a record, not a diagnosis. If your nights feel inconsistent, a short morning note can help explain your experience to a healthcare professional. You do not need a wearable or a paid app.

What to write

For a week, try this editorial template: approximate bedtime and wake time; whether you woke during the night; how rested or sleepy you feel; naps; caffeine timing; and anything unusual such as illness, travel, or a change in work. Estimates are enough. Avoid watching the clock repeatedly at night just to complete the diary.

Keep health notes private. A notebook can be sufficient; if using an app or chatbot, check how the service stores and uses sensitive data. There is no need to include names, identity numbers, or a detailed medical history in a general tracking tool.

Look at the whole week

At the end of the week, ask: did late work repeatedly reduce sleep opportunity? Did caregiving interrupt several nights? Did daytime sleepiness affect work or driving? These observations can suggest questions, but they cannot prove that caffeine, a food, or a supplement caused a particular night.

Pick one practical change, such as making the evening less crowded, and see whether it is feasible. Do not shorten sleep or change medication to run an experiment. A single good night does not establish that a change worked.

Know when to put the diary away

If tracking makes you anxious, perfectionistic, or more focused on sleep than before, stop and discuss the concern with a clinician. Your daily functioning matters more than a graph.

One action tomorrow

Write three lines: roughly when you slept, how you feel, and one factor worth mentioning. If problems persist, bring the notes to an appointment. Mention snoring, gasping, or severe daytime sleepiness rather than trying to interpret them yourself.
